  • Added:  3 months ago
  • Here is a Japan travel guide on some of the tourist traps in Tokyo and some places you could avoid in Tokyo. I hope the japan travel tips and advice gives you a heads up before travelling to Japan and makes your trip a smoother one! :)

    Places mentioned in order:

Option: Instead of paying to go up the tower, enjoy Tokyo Tower from the surroundings
    - Shiba Park (Shiba koen)
    - Zozoji Temple

or go up other places for free views of Tokyo
    - Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (in Shinjuku)
    - Carette Shiodome
    - Bunkyo Civic Center
    - Carrot Tower (in Sangenjaya)

Option: Check out the back streets, hidden paths and traditional places
    - Brahms Path
    - Harajuku Street (Back streets with vintage shops, second hand shops, hipster hangouts etc)
    - Tokyu Plaza Rooftop
    - Meiji Shrine
    - Yoyogi Park

Option: Look at sky tree from other view points and take a short 15 minute stroll to Asakusa
    - Solamachi 30th Floor
    - Asakusa

Option: Instead of paying the high table charge, check out local Japanese yokocho (back alleys filled with tiny bars and restaurants)
    - Shibuya Nombei Yokocho
    - Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho
    - Ebisu Yokocho
    - Sangenjaya Chitai Yokocho
    - Yurakucho Sanchoku Inshokugai

Phewwww... that was a lot to write haha, if you read up to here - you are the BEST!! Leave me a comment with your favourite emoji!

I would like to personally thank you for all the travel advice videos. My boyfriend and me were in Japan for three weeks in April. We were really nervous and was not quite sure to expect. Your videos really help us prepared for our trip and made sure it was a lot smoother. We really enjoyed Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building & would recommend others to check that one out!

I went to Takeshitadori in the summer on a long weekend (had to work during the weekdays). It was probably 4-5x the amount of people that was shown on this video. It was so hard walking around that we decided to just travel the side streets. We then decided to just stay on the side streets.
Also not sure about Tokyo, but there are bars/clubs throughout the Kansai area have no cover charges if you're female or a foreigner. Not because they're raciest or sexist but because females bring more males in. Not 100% sure why the foreigners are free. I think it's because they're more likely to take pictures/videos of them being on trips hence spreading free advertisement.

Just a tip for ramen enthusiasts... if your religion or personal dietary preferences restrict pork please be careful of ramen shops because most of them put lard in their soup even if they don't/won't tell you.

If you go around the rainy season which is mid June then there's hardly any lines for anything. I went to Tokyo Tower, no line. Went to Disneyland the line to get in was a bit long yet nothing compared to the usual length of the line and also hardly any lines for the rides surprisingly. However there are still a lot of people in the weekend which is understandable, especially in Harajuku. If you go there during the week there's hardly any people. I found Tokyo Tower pretty overrated, besides the shops there.

I found today your videos and they've been really helpful to get my head around what to see and visit during my trip. Where do you suggest to stay in Tokyo? I heard Asakusa is a good place to stay but considering that I'm still a young adult I thought shinjuku or shibuya would be better to be closer to the night life area.

I went to Tokyo Skytree on a weekday afternoon it was practically empty, also I did not go up to the observatory as I felt the pricing was just ridiculous, and yeah I also thought that the skytree was the best to view from a distance, and for observatory I highly recommend the one at roppongi hills. I actually found the observatory at the Tokyo metropolitan tower underwhelming despite it being free, the reflection on the glass was jus too much it hindered the whole viewing experience.

For the Sky Tree. There are two Decks you listed (Tembo Gallery(450m) & Tembo Deck(350m)) why choose the lower deck? And does the more expensive ticket get you both or only one deck? & also Which Deck did you go to?

even tho l am into the otaku culture, l found Akihabara very overwhelming and crowded. Ofc you need to look past the main street to find more 'authentic' shops and atmosphere, but overall was left a bit disappointed.
lf you want to find amazing, cheap and rare goods without dealing with a massive crowd, Nakano Broadway is an amazing alternative as well as Ikebukuro.

  • ケーシークリストファー

Wow you forgot to mention the best place and lest touristy spot Asaksa :) I highly recommend it for people traveling cheaply in Japan. It's full of great places to eat and a beautiful shrine there's a hostel that I'd love to go back to names Sakura Hostel it's very cheap and super friendly staff. Avoid the love hotels there though if you managed a successful Nampa there super expensive and kin of dirty.

When I came to Japan last year (October), I went to Sky Tree on a weekday, very early morning (9AM), no line, no wait. I highly recommend if you have the option, you do the same, but I think you also should be aware of when you're going (I was obviously going during a more "off season" time period in general since it was October).

Loved the view (clear skies all the way around), took tons of pics. Obviously missed sunset or night-time view, but glad I went at the time I did to avoid the masses.

My favorite view in Tokyo is actually from the Sunshine 60 in Ikebukuro. Its fairly cheap to get to the top, and you can get a good view of pretty much everywhere in the city, and it's pretty cool looking down on the rest of Ikebukuro at night. The only downside is the windows aren't that big there.

I really like your video and the tip with the nice side shop street, I have been several times in Tokyo so I´m getting out of ideas where to go......
I have been to the Goverment building, Tokyo tower and also Skytree for the view. For me probably the favorate was Tokyo tower. The goverment building is for me a bit out of hand and there isn´t anything nice around. Skytree is too crowded and I feel also the shops are a bit expensive, at least for me. I liked the Tokyo tower the most, it´s smaller, kinda nostalgic, there are floors with shops (tho smaller than in Skytree), which are a bit cheaper because that are chinese turist shops, at least the lady where I buyed was chinese. And I buyed nice shirts for 1000 yen each and they are still good quality. And you can easily combine with the temple and park walk.
