There are people in the comments section getting defensive, which is funny because it reminds me when I used to get defensive when people pointed out that social media was a problem. lol

I just use social media from my laptop and not my phone because it's less distracting. To me it's no different than junk food, really. You can eat junk food but it's not healthy to consume it every day.

The problem is not techonology itself, it's how much we use it.
That's what Bill is trying to address.
And it's not equivalent to books. I still have to see people having an incident because they were reading a book.
Now in my country if you're caught using your telephone while driving you get a fine and you driving license is suspended for some time. Do you know why we came to this decision? Too many people were having incidents because they were distracted by their beloved telephone or ipad.
Yes, keep saying that it's the same with books.

This is why corporate America builds nothing to last.Capitalism works when business is mutually beneficial, modern business creates a win and a loss. It actually delays progress, not enhances it. Do you think Apple keeps updating IPhones with minor updates because they just discover them and couldn't include them before? Get real. When you see a 1930's car driving around minorly restored when your 2008 car can't be, you start to get the picture of what US business is about.

I give credit to those who can use social media with self control, I couldn't. I'd find myself checking it constantly. If something funny or interesting happened to me I was automatically thinking of how to make it a status instead of just enjoying it. I feel like I've lost out on really being in the moment the past few years. In Jan. I deactivated all social media & took you tube & email off my phone (only use them via laptop). I was so afraid I'd be so out of touch if I did that but I've found the opposite - I'm so much more engaged with life again. There isn't a single day that I miss social media at all. Now my phone is texting, taking, gps & a few basic others and not something I have to constantly stare at.

Wow, Bill Mahar, as if your incessant cheerleading of Hillary and your complete dismissal of Bernie wasn't stupid enough, now this? Are you just so wiped out from pushing your insane Hillary narrative that you came up with this lame tech bashing tripe? You are no comedian--there is noTRUTH in your comedy. Who do you think is to blame for Trump? Hillary's media DONORS promoted him 24/7 during the primary, with her "pied piper" strategy so she could run her issue-free campaign. YOU and the DNC pushed Hillary against any sane judgement of her chances. The democrats cheated, and the super delegates doubled down AGAINST THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE!!! BERNIE VOTERS and ever poll ever done laid it out for them--run BERNIE. But the DNC are paid to lose and would rather lose to Trump than win with Bernie because protecting the elite is all that matters. The election had nothing to do with Russia--there's no evidence that Russia was involved but loads of evidence of election fraud on the part of Hillary and the DNC. Seth Rich is the source of Wikileaks, there was no "hack" just more insane lies from Hillary. Way to push a candidate who everyone (but fools) knew was corrupt and under imminent indictment. Now you're a Luddite, too?

So you got dopamine, right? That's the chemical that gets released in your brain whenever you do something pleasurable, like eating, sex, and that's just nature, right? Like rabbits and fish and shit. They need dopamine so that they want to consume and reproduce. But because humans have progressed and now have access to all the shit they want whenever they want it, it's easy for them to overdo and have dopamine problems. You know, it's not fuckin' rocket science, this stuff.

Part of the problem is that many people have trouble maintaining the necessary self-discipline to use Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Snapchat, etc...

I don't use Facebook or similar apps/platforms, because I'm aware of how easy it is to fall into a bad habit as a result of it. Some people can, and do, use it without developing harmful habits. The key is knowing yourself well enough to judge whether or not you'd fall into the trap of behavior that has negative consequences.

It really doesn't help that Facebook is carefully crafted to take advantage of common human flaws and weaknesses, and exploit them for maximum profit.

Weak analogy. There is no upside to smoking - it stinks, it kills you. Social media? It may be addictive, but people use it for many different purposes, some positive, some negative. For every troll that wastes your time, there's a stimulating conversation. For every pointless "friend" you add that you never actually talk to, you're also staying in regular contact with your aunt in Australia. For every dumb cat video you watch while you should be working, there's a genuinely informative article you randomly spot that shapes the way you see the world.

Bill, if Facebook is the worst "nicotine" this generation is hooked on, then that's a massive step in the right direction.

As someone with an alcoholic father, an ex-smoker mother with emphysema, and a brother who became suicidal after smoking marijuana once and was warned by doctors that continued use would've led to schizophrenia, I think it's idiotic to compare social media to cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs. The people not paying attention while crossing roads are idiots; they could easily wait 30 seconds to check their phones. Most people with social media addictions are socialising with each other, taking part in conversations, getting information about what's happening in the world. Technology hasn't closed us off from the world, it opens a new world up for us because we can instantly communicate with anybody around the planet. For me, as someone with social anxiety, social media has helped me seriously improve to the point I rarely feel anxious at all socialising irl and I've known people suffering from depression and agoraphobia who could only reach out and get help through social media, so social media actually has benefits for mental health. The substances you're comparing social media to are literally just addictive poison that end lives. People who lose lives while using technology die because they're not paying attention, not because they're addicted; as someone who has a social media "addiction", I always look crossing roads. I always pause my music/pull earphones out of my ears too; it's not just social media but any distraction that leads to accidents. Comparing carelessness to serious lifethreating substances is idiotic.

(I have nothing against medicinal marijuana taken under a doctor's advice.)

Social media is how Bernie Sanders was able to become the most popular presidential candidate in spite of accepting zero corporate money. It is the primary organizing tool of grassroots political action. It is the place where we get to share *real* news, like truthdig, counterpunch, and independent journalists like Caitlin Johnstone. Bill Maher, as much as I love his humor most of the time, is towing the corporate line. Go back to getting your news from Big Brother (the television) he says.

Social media is an open channel, people can use it to publish truth or fiction. But corporate media is a weapon of mass distraction, meant to confuse, mis-inform, divide. For example after 9/11, the CIA published a report that Iraq had WMDs. For weeks every single news channel and major newspaper was on repeat 24/7 saying WMDs, WMDs, without ever questioning the narrative. Then everyone in congress, Republican and Democrat alike, supported an invasion of Iraq on that basis. We now know it was a big lie, but somehow Americans still want to believe the CIA is legit, that it isn't a tool in the war profiteers' bag of tricks. People need to remember what happened in the past so they can avoid being fooled again in the future. Today's lies, Russiagate and Assad-is-a-monster are also brought to you by the same lying governmental agency. Russia and Syria have done nothing to us yet the television has everyone and their grandmother chanting "bomb! bomb! bomb!" Russia and Assad just happen to be in the way of the U.S.' complete control of oil in the Middle East.

Shouldn't be surprising that the comments are a bit negative on this one, because many who would be watching are exactly those Bill is talking about, and surely don't see it his way. I'm 54, and STILL don't have a smart phone. My phone makes phone calls, & texts if I can make myself do it, but that's it. Regardless, there IS an issue with so many people not paying any real attention to the real world around them, and instead retreating into whatever cyber world interests them for the next 30 seconds. There is much less actual talking among people because so many are now looking at their phones instead. Even me, who doesn't carry such a thing, is surrounded by people who are so involved in whatever is on that screen, that I feel weird about even saying anything, for fear I'm interrupting something. I get where Bill is coming from, even if it IS at least a bit, from the cranky old man perspective!

Esgar, I'm not gonna read your entire comment, I have a feeling it'll be a waste of time, jsut wanted to correct you on this. He didn't say all people who use facebook or eat kebler's cookies are addicts, but taht's what the companies want them all to be.

    • esgaril
      esgaril 1 month ago

Bonsai Bean the comments are negative, because what Bill is saying is based on oversimplification and ignorance. what he's saying is the equivalent of saying that everybody who reads books obsessively reads Orwell's 1984 all the time and nothing else. anyone who reads books knows it's obviously not true, likewise anyone who actually is familiar with smartphones knows that facebook addicts are just a small part of the people using smartphones. every single person uses their phone differently, uses different applications, so saying that everyone with a smartphone is just mindless addict is pretty ignorant.
just to mention a few things people use their phones for: reading books, newspapers, chatting with their friends and family, doing research, planning their evening / weekend / holiday by looking up places, making reservations, handling their finances, paying bills, filing tax papers, looking for the latest news in their hobby subjects, checking public transport schedules etc, the list is practically endless. these are the things people are doing around you when looking at their phones. saying that these are not connected to the "real world" just because it's happening on a phone is ridiculous. btw while I agree that likehunting on fb is stupid, I hope you know that those people you connect with there are real people and just because you post something on your wall instead of going over to everyone individually to tell them that thing, it is just as real. there is no such thing as a "cyber world" as you or Bill imagine it. the people you talk to online are actual people, you are simply using a different tool then usual to communicate.
on the subject of talking to strangers around you: I'm not a youngster myself (39 this year) and I've never seen the appeal of it in my life. the only difference is that I used a walkman not a phone to discourage it when I was young. maybe I'm a grump or something but I really don't care about the medical issues or political views of the person sitting next to me on the bus and I most definitely don't want to talk about my problems with them, I'd much rather spend the travel time by doing something I actually enjoy like reading or talking to someone I do care about.
I agree that there are problems that need to be solved, this happens with every new technology (cars, microwaves, etc), but to do that you need to be informed first and Bill didn't do his homework on this one.

i like to check my phone so people around me checking their phones don't stop looking at their phones and stare at me like i'm serial killer. my phone doesn't even have internet, but it seems to keep people more relaxed and talk to me when there is no update on their phones.
