Why no aquarium has a great white shark

  • Added:  11 months ago
  • Many have tried to keep a white shark in captivity. Here's why that's so difficult.

There are several aquariums around the world, including one in Georgia, that house whale sharks, the biggest fish in the sea. But not one has a great white shark on display. Aquariums have made dozens of attempts since the 1970s to display a captive great white shark. Most of those attempts ended with dead sharks. By the 2000s, the only group still trying was the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which spent a decade planning its white shark program. In 2004, it acquired a shark that became the first great white to survive in captivity for more than 16 days. In fact, it was on display for more than six months before it was released back into the ocean. In the following years, the Monterey Bay Aquarium hosted five more juvenile white sharks for temporary stays before ending the program in 2011. It was an expensive effort and had come under criticism due to injuries that some of the sharks developed in the tank. Responding to those critics, Jon Hoech, the aquarium's director of husbandry operations, said: "We believe strongly that putting people face to face with live animals like this is very significant in inspiring ocean conservation and connecting people to the ocean environment. We feel like white sharks face a significant threats out in the wild and our ability to bring awareness to that is significant in terms of encouraging people to become ocean stewards." Check out the video above to learn why white sharks are so difficult to keep in captivity and how the Monterey Bay Aquarium designed a program that could keep them alive.

Of course they would swim into walls constantly! Their eyes suck because they rely on their senses of smell and electrical signal detection. Glass walls would be completely undetected, killing them through body and brain damage as they rammed into the walls all the time

He didn't know why that shark died after they released it? Hmm, maybe because animals aren't meant to be kept in containers. These things sicken me. It's one thing if a species is on the brink of extinction or if they can't survive in the wild but to display them for our entertainment is wrong.

So basicly you need a giant lake that is set up like an aquarium. and for viewers its better to either just give them small looking ports, domes or glass tunnels on the bottom for ppl to watch through. and even then the chance for a visitor to see him well isnt anything close to a garantee. + how do you maintaining someting like that size.

Yea.. i don't see putting something like that together won't be providable enough to justify it,

4:35 What he's trying to say is that it costs way to much money, time, and resources to get a White Shark in an exhibit and maintain it. And they weren't making enough profit to make the effort worth it. As they stated earlier that they only had a 30% traffic increase at the aquarium.

i understand zoos and aquariums can do important work in the areas of education, conservation and research, but I don't understand why so many feel the need to keep killing animals that obviously aren't comfortable in captivity. I feel like we can manage only seeing some kinds of sharks in aquariums.

Yes I agree sharks and large animals like whales should not be kept captive, however being from Monterey being an active member of the community I can promise that the Monterey bay aquarium does not take in animals to hurt or abuse them. In fact many of them are released after a year at most. The aquarium has many programs where you can help keep beaches clean and the ocean safe from any damage that the public might unknowingly be inflicting upon their environment. They fight against frackers and polluters and have risked a lot to keep animals in the Monterey bay safe. If there are any questions you may have I recommend that you watch some more videos on the Monterey bay and what we do as a community to leave a good impact on the world.

why do we have to enclose every fuckn animal for our personal entertainment ..they die out of stress and depression...they are predators with nothing or no other creature that would prey on them..so it's overwhelming depression because they do not compute captivity or the feeling of being prey..let them be..we don't have to trap and parade every damn animal we've encountered

Captivity is captivity is captivity, whether it is humans, animals, mammals, whales, fish, reptiles,or insects it is wrong and is the instinctive behaviour of the white man.
