What It's Like To Work At BuzzFeed + Have My Own Channel

  • Answering your questions about what it is like to both create videos for BuzzFeed as well as have a channel outside of my job. I hope this also gives a new perspective to anyone deciding whether to be a solo internet creator vs. to work for a company.

I feel like both parties are benefiting from Michelle running her own channel but still working for Buzzfeed. For example, If Michelle's channel never hits a level where she can support herself or where it can become her main source of income then she'll have buzzfeed to fall back on. Also a plus for Buzzfeed is that they'll stop losing their employees just because they want to work on side projects but mainly their own channels. It's smart of them to require a first look clause and I'm sure if her channel blows up in a couple months they have clause for that too.

I'd bet that BuzzFeed would have axed her with the others too but they probably made a deal with her where she could make videos for her own channel regularly to somehow difuse all the rumors of them being a controlling, shitty company to work for. But I bet they are more controlling of her channel than we realize. it's just a front.

Contracts vary from person to person, what may be required for one person may not be the same for another. Don't take what others have said or done and apply it to Michelle, her situation is clearly different and speculating isn't fair on her. She loves her job and gets to create for her personal channel as well and that's a pretty good deal that works for her.

Well I guess BF people do them because people ask them that question-- if not, it's a question that's gonna come up. It's a pretty bad analogy to compare BF people to regular people leaving their jobs and making a vlog about it because they're basically internet celebrities. Tons of people notice when they're gone from the videos BF puts out. I mean, what if an actor you really love from a show you watch religiously suddenly just disappears from the story with no prior explanation? That's kind of what happens when a BF personality (esp pretty prominent ones like Saf, Candace and Gaby) leaves Buzzfeed and just randomly disappears from the content we're so used to seeing them in.

    • Desert Rivers
      Desert Rivers 1 month ago

ok so I'm pretty sure Candice said in her vlog that Michelle has quit BF and I'm pretty sure she said Jordan has left also. so maybe Michelle is just waiting for her last BF video before she does the standard 'Why I left blog. which by the way I think those vlogs are dumb. I don't see people doing vlogs about why they left the tax firm they worked for or the hospital they worked at etc. Its like only ex BF employees do these.

Ok, it slightly annoys me that she gives the impression that in order to be successful on the internet that you need to have some sort of professional background via college or corporate know-how to make decent content. • Trilogy
    Trilogy 2 months ago

Several ex-buzzfeed people have said they weren't allowed to make videos for sources outside of buzzfeed while working at buzzfeed. That's why Britney got fired for example. So that's why everyone's confused as to how they're allowing you to do this, but not other people. Clearly there must be specificities we don't know about in regards to this.

Maybe she negotiated her contract differently.

    • MsBellaRosa1
      MsBellaRosa1 1 month ago

I think it's because she runs her ideas via buzzfeed 1st, to see if they can use it for their channels (analogy she used was 'first look deal'). If they say no they don't need that idea then she's free to use it on hers (she says this at 3:00 - 3:51). Seems pretty controlling of buzzfeed but hey, if she's ok with it (and it's in their contract) not much anyone can do about it.

It seems like there are going to be 2 camps of creators on the internet: those who start out in a more corporate, commercial setting and translate the skills and following earned there to personal projects, and those who are more self-made. it's weird to hear Michelle talking about barriers to entry when most of the youtubers I follow talk about the best thing about the internet being no barriers to entry: anyone with a cell phone or computer can make content and share it with their fans. "If i didn't work at buzzed I wouldn't know how to make this video"...girl, you wouldn't know how to sit on a couch and talk to a camera??

I know what she means and I LOOVE Michelle, I think she's sweet and smart and super talented, but it concerns me that there is an emerging corporatization of the free market that is the internet.

    • Rin615
      Rin615 15 days ago

Lacey Thiessen Have you seen her previous content from the helmet head stuff. It might be because shes older but theres very clearly a vast improvement on her previous works since she started at buzzfeed including the content and the production value I think she means that it probably wouldnt be as good quality if she didnt have the skills and experience from there

    • skyey2000
      skyey2000 2 months ago

I can see that argument, however, I argue that there has always more a corporate undertone to most of the popular youtubers. Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart and Hannah Hart all started originally under a BuzzFeed type corporation that owned all of their content.  Grace lost all of her previous content and fanbase when she left the company and by word of mouth and peer support built her channel to where it is now. Alfie Deyes is someone you could call self-made but he was helped by a company to meet other fledging youtubers like Marcus Butler and groomed on what type of content would appeal to a large audience. Other people transferred their blog content into youtube content like Louise Pentland.

Most of the youtubers who have had success outside of youtube were not entirely self-made and used youtube as a place to hone their craft or experience but were by no means completely self-made, they were just lesser known or working in a different part of the entertainment industry. Moreover these days there are even more barriers than there used to be, the most popular creators have been around for 6+ years by various avenues but in this day and age, to be popular you need to come from one of these corporations, have a viral video or connect with an established creator that will give you access to their audience.

She definitely wouldn't have the built-in audience she started with if she hadn't worked in BuzzFeed, the technical know-how of ring lights and various other editing/filming techniques.
