Most modern Malays are descended from people like the Chams who migrated south into Malaysia from the north. The Bugis and Minangkabau people who you are talking about have only been in Malaysia for about 300 years and only make up a very small percentage of the population. Because of the political situation at the time they were able to gain a large amount of political power and thus had a large cultural impact.

it is actually the same, most malayan people of malaysia (bout 85% of it) were actually came out from places in the modern world called indonesia (even the current PM of malaysia is bugis tribe descendant), and the phillipines also got the silat influence especially in the central to south region, since it is malayan region, if you read much, youll suprise bout the malayan history in the phillipines.

what is the difference of malaysian silat from indonesian silat? i am also a martial art practitioner here in the philippines and a fan of mma. my discipline is yaw yan. most of the time when it comes to martial art vids being posted in you tube there are people who are fast in giving bad comments bec they are not in front of the subject/s. it is like me saying "i can defeat tyson in boxing!" bec i am not in front of him but who is brave enough to do that in person with him?

saya belajar teakwondo..dulu pun saya pandang rendah dgn silat macam CitizenOfUtube tu cakap.. tapi bila dah lawan..baru tau..sebenarnya silat sangat bahaya sekali.. biar mereka tertipu dgn gerak lembut tari silat.. buah yg sebenar tersembunyi di dlam bunga..

Di malaysia sahaja wujud hingga 180 aliran silat,saya kurang pasti.saya rasa mungkin ada aliran silat tertua di malaysia tak dapat diwarisi oleh generasi muda masa kini...sudah pupus.walaupun begitu,aliran2 seni silat atau dipanggil pentjak silat oleh orang Indonesia yang wujud masa kini termasuk aliran2 dibawa masuk dari indonesia adalah amat sempurna dan mantap jika dibanding dengan "silat tua" lebih 700 tahun tahun dahulu.

Silat dipercayai sudah wujud sejak 900 tahun dahulu lagi.dibawa masuk bersama pengaruh agama HINDU tapi bukan nama silat yang sebenar,tidak diketahui.saya percaya transformasi silat hingga menjadi satu seni beladiri yang lengkap bermula di pulau Sumatera dan merebak ke semenanjung tanah melayu dan terus berkembang keseluruh kepulauan melayu(atau di panggil NUSANTARA. sebelum kedatangan agama Islam.

All martial arts have some strong and some weak points, it depends if you train it with the right "intention", how much aliveness you put in youre training.
Its not really the style that works poorly, mostly the fact that it is so stylized that the fighting essence is lost.
I'm sure the us army trains in it, but what do they not train?

Having said that I should also add that there is no Silat. No karate. No Kung Fu. No Tae Kwon Do. No Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun etc. Take your pick. A punch is a punch. A kick is a kick. An elbow is hard and a blade will cut you. Combat is as old as life. A martial art is what you play in training to cultivate energies that you may use to fight. Fighting is chaos. In a fight you can do simply what ever you can. My teacher say "Do everything as if you are gutting a pig"

True. UFC and sport fighter in general also shallow their skill by training for a sport environment. A typical Silat approach is to destroy the opponents arms and to attack the neck with elbows and hacksaws (forearms). Poke eye, break arm, go for a blade. This is not even allowed in UFC. I've never seen any limb destructions in UFC at all. It always comes down to Jab Cross Hook and a Thai kick. Combine this with a few basic locks and chokes and conditioning and there's your UFC fighter.

god you are so ill informed on silat
its WAY to vicious to use in UFC you learn not to make an opponent submit but to just break his bone immediately, the dance is simply the artistic/cultural side to it hence the ART in martial ARTS.
there are techniques hidden in the dance.
Im guessin you are one of the many that think, crossing martial arts will make you a better all round fighter? take up a class you will be proven wrong very quickly, UfC fighters shallow their skills by doing many arts

Silat was intended for jungle warfare, mainly killing. I doubt the UFC would allow you go walk in and kill someone. That doesn't mean its the ultimate art, because that is obviously up to the individual. The dance is a flowered up Juru, its hidden in the dance. If you knew anything about the history, you would know that. They hid the art because of occupying forces banned them from practicing. Don't make ill-informed comments unless you actually know your shit. Makes you and the MA look dumb.

That's because no on in the UFC knows anything about real martial arts. They are all taught the same bullshit, some punchs, kicks from muay thai, and then they sum it up with grappling. You obviously dont know a damn thing about martial arts making a comment like that one, Im willing to bet that you are an avid UFC watcher right and so by relation that makes you an expert? The filipino forces and Indonesian forces use silat, silat is taught to Special forces in the U.S as well as kali.
