I cant say I hate this runner. He beat a suspect field I think, but he did it the right way. His movement is effortless and he just might be coming into the derby on his biggest race yet. I usually toss Pletcher runners but I'm not sure that's the way to go. He's bred for the distance and is definitely one to watch.

Good luck to you too. I don't wish anyone bad luck. It should be a very good race indeed.

I never said I was going to bet him. I may play him and I may not. He may go off at 5/2 and he might go off at 5/1. Classic Empire and Irish War Cry will both certainly take a lot of money. McCraken and Gunnevera will also likely take good chunks of money.

I simply commented on this horse's ability, and the reality is he's a horse with a high cruising speed, who can finish his races in very good closing times. That is a very successful pattern for winning recent Derby races. In fact, since they changed the Derby qualification system from all graded earnings (including sprints) to a points system based upon specific route races the advantage in the race has gone to horses just like this one with tactical speed and the ability to finish because no longer can goofball trainers gain graded earnings by running their horses in sprints, and then enter those sprinters in the Kentucky Derby using those sprint earnings as qualification $. This horse is not Verrazano, and Gunnevera most certainly was being driven to the wire in the Florida Derby by Castellano to get up for 3rd and he did not make up a single step on this horse in the final 3/8th's. That isn't my opinion, it's reality.

His breeze over the Churchill track this morning was eye popping. It was about a good a pre Derby work as has ever been seen on that track. He did a 5 furlong bullet work in 59.60, best of 35 at the distance while never being seriously asked by JR through the stretch. Then it really got impressive, he galloped out 6 furlongs in 1:12 and change, 7 furlongs in 1:26 and change, and a mile in 1:40 flat. That's nuts on that track. He galloped out a mile in 1:40 flat for fun. It doesn't mean he'll win the Derby, but it was an insanely impressive work, and indicates he likes the track and is likely sitting on another very big race next Saturday.
