Trapped ring puzzle/trick IMPOSSIBLE (not really)

  • Added:  3 years ago
  • ***And another addition:
Wow. Thousands of angry and offensive comments. So:
Comments relating to this video, relevant ideas, and constructive conversations will remain un-moderated.

But, because there is no reasonable, intelligent person who would concern him/herself with wasting time to make an anonymous analysis of a person like me, if you do make a comment about me, here is what you can expect:
    #1 Your initial (useless) comment.
#2 My reply. Matched to suit, insults and all.
#3 Your angry and even less relevant reply.
#4 I get the last word. All further replies are removed.

If you make a statement relating to my person, you are clearly demonstrating to me that you are neither reasonable nor intelligent; thus, you will become like a piece of meat to me, and I will use your pointless points for my own amusement and for the amusements of others. Seriously, think about this: We don't know each other. How is it fair for you to make judgments about me, when you know so little? Don't be that guy. Do you think I'm smug, arrogant, narcissistic, or pretentious? Well, unless you have a few videos with a million plus views, keep it to yourself. You would not believe the offensive drivel that leaks out of this place.

    ***The following was later added:
Secret spoiler comments are now removed, and there is now a keyword filter. The comment that makes me laugh is the "did anyone else notice..." type. Yes, everyone else noticed. In fact, the filter catches around 30 of these comments a day, and then there is the other 5 or 10 per day that I have to remove manually because so many commenters can't spell.

It is a bit sad that un-moderated comments get so bad. One of the most surprising things about it is how many of you talk without listening; it is not uncommon to see ten of the same comment in a row (because nobody reads what others say), nor is it unusual for me to read dozens of comments about a topic that is answered in the first line of the description. Sorry if it seems as though I am chastising you, because your having taken the time to read this is evidence that none of this actually applies to you.

    ***Original description:
Because of the cruel irony that is the way that youtube views are distributed, this video will likely go largely ignored, but the idea was this: remember that surprisingly popular pinball in a cube video? I figured that I should try to repeat some of its success by reproducing the formula a little bit (including, but not limited to, use of the word "impossible" in the title for views). I think, but I can't be sure, that this puzzle/trick is better by all measures than the pinball one. I'm not really sure, because I was never really fooled by this puzzle, because I designed it. I'm not trying to sound like I'm so clever, it's just that I don't really know how long this puzzle would have stumped me, because I've never been faced with solving this particular problem. Pay attention to the moment that you knew, for certain, how the trick worked. Often we just give up and wait for the solution to be presented to us, but it sure is satisfying when you work it out for yourself. For exactly that reason, I wanted the video to progress in such a way that it reveals itself ever so slowly (for those who don't spoil it by skipping to the end), which forces the viewer's brain to work at least a little towards figuring it out for themselves. Maybe I'm thinking too much into this, but maybe not. I mean, if a stadium full of people are going to watch this, I have at least some small responsibility to those people, in the sense that they should be engaged or be improved in some way after being distracted from their lives by watching it. Maybe if some of them learn the general idea of what an algorithm is, they didn't waste their time. Whatever. Maybe I'm not that good at it, but I just try to make videos in a way that would interest me if I were the one watching. Well, I'm sending this video public right now, and I am very curious to find out how well received this puzzle will be. Thanks for listening.

I don't understand why so many people are disliking the video, I found it very fascinating and strangely satisfying. The way he produces his work so precisely is almost mesmerising.

If it's about the description, then I'm not even going to bother to acknowledge your feelings. He isn't wrong, in fact I agree with pretty much all his points. His video, his rules. He can do what he likes, he doesn't need your permission.

I certainly appreciate your nice words and support. Check my back catalogue; I now have quite a number of videos, and some of them are pretty good (not necessarily the ones with lots of views). I also have a second channel, and the commenters there are great. I chase away the general audience from that channel with periodic videos about birds, train-tracks, children's books, philosophy, and any other boring but intellectually substantive material I can muster.

Drop me a comment at some point and let me know what you think/thought ;)

Also, expect hidden eggs like this one:

+pocket83 You are a really intelligent person, and I admire that. I am very disappointed at the reactions you've received, and I hope it doesn't affect you too badly. This was the first video I have seen on your channel, and you've certainly intrigued my interest... Hopefully I could help you by sharing it with people who I know will appreciate your wonderful work.

I believe the negative commenters feel threatened by your intelligence, as you aren't afraid to speak out against them and call them out. Don't be discouraged by them, let them entertain and educate themselves. It honestly shouldn't be that hard for them if they took the effort to complain.

    • pocket83
      pocket83 7 days ago

Thanks. Most people don't read the description. After thousands of complaints, threats, and assorted angry messages, I think I now have a pretty good feeling why. Most of them feel as though I've been dishonest, because they thought this was exclusively about a sophisticated puzzle mechanism, but instead I show a simple 'how to' and then outline a general problem-solving strategy: the law of parsimony. They feel cheated, because they believe that they already _knew_ that. This isn't technically a true "puzzle," at least according to their personal semantic. This was just a selfish grab at views, and a boring one at that.

Two things still disappoint me. 1) I wish they would realize that my channel is primarily about building things, and that this was meant to be a blank format for making more complex puzzles. 2) If the lesson is so obvious, why don't they all just realize it intuitively early in the video (and then leave), rather than watching the whole thing and then complaining.

Bottom line: nobody likes to be made to feel dumb, even though more than half of all people _are_ dumb. And this video shows them all that. Also, I'm a cocky jerk that reviles rudeness and entitlement.

*Statistical note: children, elderly, and the otherwise sick or infirm tip the balance on the Bell curve to easily satisfy my "more than half" claim. Most intelligence assessments don't control for those variables, so the 'average' is probably a standard deviation generous.

What's wrong with trying to get people's attention with a video title? It's like a book, the title is intriguing whereas the content is meant to be the part you pay the most attention to.

  • realflow100
    realflow100 20 days ago

I actually figured it out prettttttyyyy quickly.
because it HAS to be that the center post has to be able to opened freely. either pull it one direction or tap it to get it free. you might be able to tell since its loose and not tight.

make it harder where you have to spin it quickly to loosen internal pins or tap it a certain way instead of just making it easy to pull down with your fingers

it would be much MUCH harder to figure out..

I like how you put "trick" in the title, seems correct since you hide information from the user :P

  • spammemang
    spammemang 27 days ago

i had something similar as a kid, except it was a pinball inside four posts.. the real difference is that the magnet completely locked the post in place, you couldnt just pull the post down. you had to give it a sharp whack at the correct angle to knock the magnetic pin out and free the post.

Lol so many people acting like puzzle know it all or being disappointed because it wasn't difficult enough for them, after they saw how it was made.

Correct me if im wrong but most of the complainers are only complaining after they see how its made! These experts didn't know up until that point.

Some people just don't realize that the point of some puzzles is not to be multistepped processes but a simple hidden solution that has you stumped.

This is the puzzle you would hand to your friends or these hater "experts" and laugh at then trying to figure it out.

      pocket83 Exactly!

Really? Death threats? Wow and i bet these are the same type of people that if you tell them to shut their mouth in real life they either run to their mother or try and get a restraining order on you.

Yeah unless you are truly smart which none of the people that leave those comments are.

Eh keep doing what you are doing and ignore the haters. Most of them can't even cook their own food i bet let alone make this.
That said all and all i wouldn't make one of these but if i saw one i would buy it and test people with it for fun.

    • pocket83
      pocket83 28 days ago

That is so true and funny. "THIS WOULD NEVER FOOL ME!" ...after having just sat through eight minutes certain that the solution was to be found elsewhere.

Thousands and thousands of hate messages. I've even had death threats over it. They all seem to believe that they would know better. Just like everyone in 2017 _knows_ that the Earth goes round the Sun, and so if they had lived in the year 1500, they wouldn't have believed in something as silly as the Earth being the center of the universe.
Yet the whole world believed it.

Figured it out from the thumbnail, but I'd looked at a few other puzzles beforehand, one with a ball bearing and two magnets in each half of a cleverly designed "dovetail" box that kept the thing from sliding open. That one needed a tap to shock the ball into the deeper hole. I probably wouldn't have guessed yours without having viewed the other video.

Nice video man. I enjoyed it a lot. Loved the little surprise and yes there are a lot of negative types out there who thrive on slinging insults towards others whom they don't even know. It's a reflection of how one would act in a car for example during a road rage incident. People are so tough when they are at a distance or hidden behind a computer somewhere anonymously. It's sad actually. Keep up the good work.
