This makes me think. From a book called Orbit of the Discovery, I read that NASA stopped painting the orange external tank of the space shuttle white since they could save 600 pounds of weight. 68 gallons of paint must be pretty heavy, too. It certainly makes planes look better, but wouldn't it just be more efficient to now paint planes?

  • Ranz
    Ranz 14 days ago

I still don't get why they chose to paint their planes white when every plane is already white. A different base color makes your plane stand out way more. I guess they have a reason behind that

The paint dissolves off. To melt something heat has to be applied.

You can buy this 'extreme paint thinner' yourself. It's called Aircraft Remover (Awesome, I know, right?) it's made by Rust-Oleum. It's amazing stuff.

    • John Smith
      John Smith 17 days ago

Simply put, weight. It is more cost effective to repaint it than haul hundreds of pounds of extra paint around for years. Rough estimate is around 700lbs of paint for this job. Guess lots of airlines have gone back to buffed aluminum for just this reason. You also have to figure in the drag of the air over the paint as it deteriorates.

This is an outrage. I can't believe that an airline would paint their planes white and call it "Fresh, clean, and good as new." I can't believe all of the racism caused by Virgin Australia, a white supremacy airline, against the African-American community. I don't think they have painted a single plane black, and they are saying that the white is "fresh" and "clean." Screw the Alt-right!

Those guys that do this have some serious talent. You may think its easy to just paint something but its not, plus the physical stress of bein on a lift, in a chemical suit, and holding a nozzle for hours sucks! plus some real artwork skills to get the masking of the logo and shadow on it to look great and the same every time

Someone needs to secretly switch out their paint thinner for mercury paste. Then the plane will melt. Imagine the reactions from the re-paint crew, when they walk in the following morning, and there's just like seats, wires, hydraulics, engines, just sitting there on the ground in a heap of aluminum goo.
