Ridley Scott may claim he got the idea for the MARTIAN from a 2011 novel, but the original story concept came from the 1964 movie "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" I saw it as a kid and it starred Paul Mantee, The late great Adam West (Batman), and Victor Lundin as Friday. There is truly nothing new under the Sun, just like "The Hunger Games" author Suzanne Collins ripped off the 1996 novel Battle Royale by Koushun Takami. Since her book was published around 2008 I'd find it hard to buy that Takami''s 1996 source material didn't have some influence.

Interstellar was rubbish. It did have great potential, but crashed and burned when the story became ridiculous. It completely blew the scene on the water covered planet that should have been the suspenseful pinnacle of the movie, but instead was completely pedestrian and ho-hum. Then it all got completely stupid and silly when the main protagonist ended up in the fourth dimension via a black hole that should have crushed him - all very fluffy and an insult to my intelligence. Seems like the writers ran out of ideas and got high before they finished the script. So disappointing, and there are so many better movies set in space.

Gravity sucked. In the lead up to the release of they talked so much about how the movie followed the laws of physics as close as possible. Then i watched the movie, and saw how much bullshit that was as the laws of physics was thrown out by the writers within about 20 minutes of the movie. The moon should have been at number 3# instead.

Star Trek - skip. Poor script, stupid "science."
    Sunshine - haven't seen
Star Wars - skip - just a refresh of A New Hope, without the aspects that made that good.
Avatar, good, but a poor script.
Guardians - great fun, but that's all.
Gravity - great visuals; stupid science; mediocre acting
    Martian - Meh
Interstellar - haven't seen it yet, but seems a bit silly

Moon is deserving, but I would put Serenity at the top.

Including Interstellar and Gravity invalidates this whole list. Putting them at the top is absurd. Interstellar in particular was just really poor. Gravity had its moments but generally was pretty weak.

Interstellar? It's just another Contact. We wait and wait and find that the fricken 'alien' is the dad. The ending seemed weird when there is not enough plot development when it came to the love story. What if he went all that way and then find her long dead because of time dilation or that she didn't really return the favour. In another sense, why didn't any of the surviving humans attempt to retrieve her or find volunteers to accompany her in her colony.
I would have liked to see Solaris on the list but the George Clooney version concentrated too much on the love story rather than the principal critique of our tendency to humanise aliens. In Solaris, we don't even know if the alien life form is aware of humans or even able to think in the same way. In most Sci-fi treatments, aliens are humanoid with minor variations, part of our arrogance in thinking that our form is close to the perfect form (as the Bible says, in God's image.)

The final act of Sunshine is awful. It had the potential to be such an amazing movie, but I think even the people making it didin't know how to live up to the expectations they established with the first 2/3 of the film. The ending was such a cop-out.

However I definitely agree Interstellar was the best sci-fi film I've seen in a while. This decade of film has been very good to science fiction.

The Force Awakens sucked. The only thing it had to offer was cheap nostalgia. "Great characters" Oh please, Rey was a Mary Sue, Kylo Ren was a Jacen Solo rip-off and the others were only mediocre at most. JJ Abrams didn't revive shit, he just rehashed every single shot from A New Hope and turned it into some generic shit.

I agree Interstellar should be in the top 10 but not #1. I truly think we need to stop making Christopher Nolan out to be the greatest director of this generation. Interstellar was too long and that the last act was terrible. It shows that he never really cared about his family. If he did he would have asked about his son and stayed with his elderly daughter more than 5 minutes, instead of running off to someone who an hour on her planet is years where he is.

With the exception of Guardians of the Galaxy, and to a lesser extant Star Wars: the Force Awakens, this may well be the WORST list I have ever watched on WatchMojo.com. The rest of the films are either boring, pedantic, derivative, or just downright dull. As a Star Trek fan I was disgusted with what JJ Abrams did to the franchise. Gravity was so dull I couldn't believe all of the accolades that it received. Sunshine and Moon were barely seen by anyone. And then there's Avatar - simply the worst drivel ever put to digital celluloid. I think my opinion is quite clear - the modern outer space/sci-fi genre has lost all of it's wonderment in exchange for fancy special effects and stories that bore the hell out of viewers.
