Have you ever heard that you become more powerful in life-or-death situations? There are a lot of anecdotes about super strength, but is it a real thing?

  • Cavouku
    Cavouku 1 month ago

Ah, this is one I actually got into a lot of discussions with my biology and kinesiology professors about.

Their general consensus was that a professional weightlifter, and many other pro athletes, are capable of using about 98-99% of their total muscular force, at least in certain actions (e.g., deadlift). That extra 1% doesn't do anything special, it would literally be a 1% increase, and is mostly left out to account for how rare it is to do 100% of anything.

Basically this means that your limit is equal to or (far more likely) less than pro athletes. The cross-sectional area of your muscles and their myofibril composition (Type I, Type IIa, Type IIx fibers, fiber length, bunch of stuff) determines your maximum possible strength. Pro athletes probably have bigger muscles than you, at least those in the strength-oriented competitions. Nobody is becoming the Hulk because of a bumped toenail.

I did this once. I and one other guy picked up a minivan that had rolled onto a person, by the luggage rack. We flipped it over. Leverage was on our side as the luggage rack was on an uphill side and the geometry made it less work to flip over. But still, I doubt we could have done it in a non-emergency.

I remember in elementary we would have to run have a mile everyday at the beginning of p.e. class and on normal days I would finish in the middle of the class. But on one day the test sirens went off in the middle of our run and I decided to imagine it was like the zombie apocalypse and I was running from a hoard, I ended up finishing 2nd in the class that day so I must have gotten some extreme adrenaline.

When I was an MP it took the whole patrol to bring a soldier on PCP into the hospital.
We got him strapped onto a gurney and put him in a dark room to calm him.
After a few minutes we heard him roar and a crash. He had ripped a strap away and flipped the gurney. These straps were like seat-belts, I thought them impossible to rip. We held him while he was sedated.
The next day we found out that the subject had dislocated his shoulder and torn muscles all across his torso.
And he was very embarrassed and apologetic.

In combat I have experience these heighten awareness and for long periods of time. I remember the first time in a fire fight my heart was racing and all my senses became as one. It seemed like I could see farther, hear everything, and able to move faster with precision. This feeling then became normal until you came home and realized how slow life in the states really is. On occasion I can tap into that awareness and feel invincible with no fear but I have learned that this feeling only last for so long and afterwards I am tired as if I had been lifting weights all day. I do believe we all have the ability to do extraordinary things if we all learned to tap into that state of heighten awareness.

Probably what's going on is that the body doesn't use all its strength all the time because it's both efficient and less stressful on the body, but in an emergency situation the benefits of using maximum available strength outweigh the risks, since the entire goal of a single organism- evolutionarily- is to survive and reproduce.

I wish I could remember the documentary I saw that had something like this happening to a man that was out mountain climbing and a boulder fell on top of him yet he somehow managed to get it off of himself, but injured himself very badly in the process. The video explained, like in this video, that you normally don't use all the muscles in your arms and legs at once when moving normally, but in a life or death situation your brain can override that factor holding it back and you can lift something like twice what you normally can.

      Nick F.
Your heart is made of something called "cardiac muscle". The heart is the only thing in the body with this type of muscle, because all it really is good for is pumping blood.

Your arms and legs have a type of muscle called "skeletal muscle". It's called that because it's attached to your skeleton.

If we replaced the skeletal muscle with cardiac muscle, we wouldn't really even be able to move because cardiac isn't the "lifting muscle" that skeletal muscle is.

Answer- no. In fact, we'd die pretty fast.

Hope this is a good and helpful answer. =)

When I was in middle school, I was a pretty skinny kid, probably like 110 Ibs and 5'5', and don't work out. There was this bully hoodlum in class who grabbed me from behind and put me in a choke hold. I felt so much adrenaline that I was able to lift him up with only my arms holding his near my neck where he was choke holding me and I nearly dropped him on the class tables in front of me, enough for him to release me and fall. And this guy was way bigger than me, especially in middle school, like 270ish Ibs and really built, and I remember doing that like it was nothing, like my legs and arms went full gear. It felt like I could do anything at that time like fight or flight. The bully was too shocked to come at me again after that, because to him it seemed like i lifted him up extremely easily. Clear to say I couldn't do that again afterwards, because at separate occasions other kids a little less heavier tried seeing if I could do it again. I could barely lift them an inch off the ground without feeling like i'm under huge pressure. Still I was called a strong kid that whole year lol.

Yeah, sometimes adrenaline can do strange things. For example, I have pretty fast reflexes, and because of that even the faintest signals make me react with a lot of force. Once I was sprinting with one of my friends (just because), while talking to each other (yeah I know it wasn't the smartest idea), when I suddenly noticed a fence in front of me, which reached my core in height, and I instinctively jumped over it with ease.

I experienced something similar. Once i was at a friend's house laying down chilling and this guy legit tripped and fell on top of me. I was so shocked that even though he was almost twice my weight, he was lying two meters away the next second. Apparently I threw a 100 kg muscled guy up and away as easy if I was throwing a small child. I only remember him laying 2meters away looking at me with a wtf expression.

Imagine you were crazy strong. You try to pick up a tank. You think, no problem. But you can't lift it. When you try you just drive your body into the ground. You grab hold of a helicopter and try to pull it back down. But you can't, the helicopter just lifts you into the air. You try and punch through a wall, but you can't because your fist keeps encountering an almost solid wall of compressed air and you shoot backwards away from the wall at high velocity.
