Launch of Orion EFT-1 on Delta IV Heavy, The First Step to Mars

LAUNCH REPLAYS: http://youtu.be/hN2j2fQFP64

A Delta IV Heavy rocket thundered into orbit today from Space Launch Complex 37B carrying the very first Orion Spacecraft into orbit. This mission, labelled Exploration Flight Test 1 (EFT-1) is unmanned and will test Orion's onboard systems and heat shield for a re-entry from lunar missions.

Liftoff occurred at 12:05 UTC, December 5th 2014, Orion will separate from the second stage at around 3 hours into flight before re-entering Earth's atmosphere and splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.

Launch was delayed from December 4th due to ground winds, and then problems with fill and drain valves on the Delta IV rocket.

Still years after this video was published, this Orion mission is the most brain dead idea ever. Just contractors, politicians all seeking jobs for non existent money and power to go someplace that has no future for anyone in the human race. Devote this money to the real problem in our lives, Fukushima Daiichi . Can you say killing us softly?

And here comes Orion around the bend, its neck and neck, this is going to be a close one folks... nice presenter.

Fun fact: for whatever reason, the Delta IV is the only rocket to use liquid hydrogen for both the booster stage, rather than kerosene. So in theory, it's the world's first environment-"friendly" rocket, if you ignore the boosters crashing into the ocean...

Author Sonny Ng ( ago)
Very cool, inspiring! US aerospace techs are conservative historically per safety reasons as they should. In contrast, Soviets space milestones initially outpaced those of American but they paid for the hurried advances in bloods. Russian rockets and Soyuz are reliable old techs yet stagnate compared to burgeoning private US space industry.

Author Michal Zwirek ( ago)
This is NOT a way forward. Orion is going to be another dead end of the space program. It is not a significant leap forward in any way.It uses expendable and costly launch vehicle.Delta 4 Heavy cost $375million per launch+you have cost of Orion itself. How many such flights can NASA afford per year? They are very conservative in their thinking.Trying to solve tomorrow's challenges with yesterday's methods. It is a bit like at the end of the 19th century they faced a problem of inefficient and slow individual transport mostly done by horse-drawn carriages. They could have "improved" it by let's say making lighter carriages or putting pneumatic tyres on them or they could make a big and bold move and invent cars...So which way was better?...There is a British company working on Skylon(a rocket plane with air breathing engines). If they succeed the cost per launch will drop to $5million.Even $10 million would be a revolution in space exploration. The Moon and Mars would be truly within our reach. Orion with its cost and 60 years old concept of delivering cargo to orbit is going nowhere. We will keep on dreaming about Mars for another 20 -30 years. Dream on, dream on........

Author MurphMonkey ( ago)
so they used millions of dollars just for a test. and the starving ppl in Africa said.....

Author Izio Shaba ( ago)
screw governmental space flight. they couldnt interest the public to save their life.

Author The Reflection ( ago)
It's amazing how you sheep believe this nonsense. The lift off is undoubtedly real, but the moment the craft reaches a certain point and the rocket's "go pro" camera takes over looking downward, it is all CGI based. They can make anything they want happen after that point. In the coming years they will send a bunch of "courageous" men and women to Mars, and it will all be filmed on earth. How gullible people are.

Author Robert Willis (596 years ago)
Orion is an obscenity. It's purpose is not to transport people into space. It's purpose is to transport tens of billions of  taxpayers dollars into the gaping maw of Lockheed Martin. There is nothing that Orion can do that Dragon V2 cannot do at a fraction of the cost. Both Soyuz & Shenzhou are markedly superior designs.

Liquid hydrogen burns so clean. You don't see huge plumes of white smoke trailing the rocket like you do with solid rockets.

Rekords from Cartoon Networks?

Author Sammy Feldman ( ago)
Why can't we just make the Delta IV Heavy the primary launch vehicle, rather than SLS? I mean, it obviously works well, and we wouldn't have to spend money developing the SLS. It's also environmentally friendly with it's HydroLox engines. The SLS has two SRBs that shoot out smoke and not-so-good things.

Author Fifty0ne ( ago)
I can't wait for the first manned orion mission, even if it's to LEO... it's going to be a site to see. I didn't get to live through the apollo era, but seeing this launch instantly made me think of the Saturn V. The SLS will be darn close in size to the S-V.

Author MeetballSub ( ago)
Anyone else here hoping they're in that capsule to be the first humans on Mars? Or is it just me? I am going to 9th grade in a few days and I am making sure to study all of NASA's preffered/required skills. At the least I want to leave our atmosphere of hatred and war on my way to tranquility at the ISS.

This absolutely makes me proud to be American. It'll be amazing when the SLS returns astronauts to the Moon in a few years time, and a few short years later, we'll be on Mars. GO SCIENCE!

Author Mindrex ( ago)
I am glad to see us back in space with our Own spacecraft, and not having to bum a ride from the freeking Russians. But Really? we have to re-hash the Apollo "capsule" way of going into space?!? Sure our computers are 10,000 times better then back in the 1960-1971 era, but We really could not come up with something better??

We should be building Super Star Destroyers and Millenium Falcons by now! We still have not come up with a Hyper-drive??!? Come on man this is 'Merica!!!!
