incorect altimeter setting which resulted in him miscalculating the altitude required to perform the maunever.

How many seconds did he have to shoot himself out of the death-speeding thunderbird plane?
Author RainbowManification (6 days)
@funkuser thunderbirds knock it off = a Thunderbird aircraft has crashed, stop performance.

@bhogenson2008 ahhhh that isn't right. your altimeter setting is based on the barometic pressure. tower will give you altimeter settings example 29.92 (thats a standard day) it's got nothing to do with setting altimeter to sea level or ground level.
Author bhogenson2008 (7 days)
@PapaBare100 I know altimeters use atmospheric pressure. It is standard procedure at air shows to adjust your altimeter to zero when you are on the airfield. He didn't do that so he attempted his split s too low since his altimeter said he was high enough to do it since it was zeroed to sea level.
Author AirForceBullDAWG (7 days)
Can I take his place?
Author PapaBare100 (8 days)
@bhogenson2008 altimeters are based on the measurement of atmospheric pressure. The greater the altitude, the lower the pressure. it's got nothing to do with being at sea level. The ACM he was attempting is called a split S, he rolled inverted to soon and was to low, he ran out of room at the bottom.

@funkuser They are saying, "Thunderbirds, knock it off, knock it off!" which is their code to immediately assume a safe flight attitude, straight and level and a safe distance from each other because something drastic has just happened. They rehearse "knock it off" in each maneuver until they can become safe at any point in the flight demo. Someone says "knock it off"...the show is over.
Author Ilovecoffee91 (9 days)
What are they saying?
Author ascolti (11 days)
@bhogenson2008 Yeah.... that will do it. :-)
Author Callabris (13 days)
@bhogenson2008 Actually his mistake was not calculating the GA of the air base correctly. He got the ground altitude wrong of the region he was going to be flying in. even if he had it set to sea level he would have had the same accident. even at sea if he attempted that maneuver at that altitude he would be forced to eject as well. He would have had the same issue, not enough altitude to get the airspeed back to pull out of it.

This crash occured because the pilot failed to set his altimeter to the right setting for the airbase he was flying at, causing him to think he was a 1000 feet higher than he actually was. Unfortunately it was pilot error. He was praised for aiming the plane away from the crowd but his ThunderBird carreer was over at that point.
Author RWJsTroll2650 (1 month)
@guccamain
Actually
He ejected 0.8 seconds before impact.
He crashed cuz the maneuver he was attempting had a required altitude of 2500 feet. He made it at 1700 feet.
